Music is incredibly pervasive in modern human life!

How and why do we experience music the way that we do? One of the best ways to answer this question is to study and compare listeners of different ages to uncover what they know about music, when they know it, and how they learn it.

Our lab examines how human knowledge of music is shaped by the innate structure of the auditory system, by our culture-specific listening experiences, our participation in musical activities (such as dancing and singing), and by the knowledge we simultaneously acquire in other domains such as language.

By studying how infants, children, and adults respond to and understand music, we want to answer these fundamental questions about our musical nature. We are actively recruiting infants ages 2-10 months, and children 4-17 years of age to participate in our studies.

Take part in an online music cognition study!

Want a chance to be part of our music cognition research without leaving your own home? Take part in our online study! We are looking for individuals to participate in an online study on the perception of rhythm in music. You’ll listen to clips of music and other sounds and answer questions about them. The entire study will take between 15-20 minutes to complete. You will need a web browser and a pair of headphones.
